Yvonne P. Lamar-Rogers
Long Journey Home 1
Mixed Media
28” x 18”

Lamar-Rogers is a mixed media series that reflects some of the music of the Antebellum period in American history, or as some elders call it “Slavery Times.”

The song that first inspired this series is “Steal Away.” This song is one of many that were instructional to slaves trying to escape, an example being, “He calls me by the thunder,” meaning slaves would leave during a thunderstorm. And “Green trees bending,” refers to fleeing in early spring.
The research Lamar-Rogers conducted to create Long Journey Home, was life changing for the artist. Even with the cultural deprivation Black people endured during slavery, they held onto their music. Their love for each other and the need of basic survival lived on.
