Jason Phillips
Making A Joyful Noise
Oil on Canvas
36” x 60”

Vibrantly illustrates praise and prayer. It visually conveys a reverence, a calling for spiritual freedom, a longing for an end of oppression and deliverance into something better, while imaging gospel music as the grand means of expression. Music is a ministry, it is a language and so it communicates.

The artist depicts the connection between the captivating sounds of gospel music and provocation of feelings and emotions, prayer and calling, by painting images of invigorated female figures singing and dancing in spirit. Figures in the artwork demonstrate profound facial expressions and dynamic poses to display the compelling energy that gospel music brings forth.

Phillips was deeply influenced by gospel music and artists such as Aretha Franklin and Fred Hammond.
